Seeding the New Paradigm

Seeding the Paradigm

As the metaphor suggests seeds are potential that can take root and flourish or wither. The studio activates the seeds in the art-practice, but the measure of value is how well they take to root. Which is not always visible. The petri dish of the studio cultivates experiences through the materials in hand and those of the psyche through somatic-imagery for deeper reflection on a congruent structure of reality.

Into the Liminal

The liminal is the Threshold between worlds, not clearly defined in its permeability. Our time on the planet is one when old paradigm assumptions are eroding—deconstructing to enable something new to arise. In this marking practice there is no plan and little control, although there is deep intention. The images that arise speak to a greater context. In a metaphor that Rupert Spira uses it like the set up for a joke. We have no idea where the story is going until the punchline. Then it all connects. It will lose the humor by trying to explain. There is willingness to be suspended in the liminal by mutual engagement to let the story setup. The punchline is seeds for a new identity.

Liminal Underworld through Monoprints

Cold waxed monoprints become dominate marks projecting common things like combs, ribs and keyholes into a new context. Initiation into the journey of the underworld requires relinquishing something known for the unknown—a stripping down of identity and meaning for what might be.

Liminal Threshold: Mixed Media

In theater, the opening of the fourth wall changes the game inviting in the audience in, in an active way. The shrine or altar is also an invitation for a greater participation that creates a new playing field if you are willing.

Anteroom Trance-formations

This series used tissue from dress patterns with the instructions and markings echoing the complexity of fabrication, as well as fashion and reflection of identity beyond a apparel. Amid the engineering chaos a simple garment emerged as a haven of simplicity. This became a touch stone for peace at the center of crazed instructions. Music Score and Dyed & Wrapped both use elements from other pieces in other ways.

Emerging from the Liminal

The liminalis not clearly defined as the Threshold between worlds. Gathering Selves is filled with ancestors standing on what feels to be a portal. It becomes an Xray of the mouth in The Telling. Again, ancestors populate the bottom half silhouetting fields of diamonds in rows like an abacus. The Hierophant with multiple layers of cold wax and monoprints on tissue is explored at the top with barely readable transfers from fashion magazines. Bird-Woman continues familiar patterns. Ancestors covering her mouth allowing her hands to manipulate the dangling X-ray portal. Cage-of-toxins sits at her feet with the ancient living fossil of gingko leaves collecting on the grass.
